I am interested in learning martial arts but i dont wanna end up wasting time and money in a McDojo. This school teaches Hung Ga but it has japanese belt systems. Can anyone tell if its a legit martial arts school? http://www.kung-fu-fitness-and-defence.com/kung-fu-lessons.html|||I went and browsed for a minute on the link you provided and for sure its a McDojo as you so eloquently put it.
Belt system in in Chinese martial arts is not traditional and I have a lot of objections with it.|||It's really impossible to tell whether or not they are legitimate based on a web site. It is true that many kung fu schools worldwide have adopted the grade ranking scale of other styles. Most use sashes though, and not belts. Maybe that's what the site is referring to. Think about it, even taekwondo uses belts and they are from Korea. Many styles now use belts as a form of ranking. I don't like the idea myself, however, people these days want something to constantly tell them they are doing well. It's quite sad. I will say the site looks sketchy at best. You should be cautious. They seperate boys and girls classes at the childrens' level. I find that to be very weird.|||It's is really hard to say if this school is good or not. The web site is so commercialized that I think I bought a triple use can opener just by reading it. Not a good sign. The head instructors bio seems quite impressive but then there are the rankings. Rather odd but totally unacceptable today. The constant tournaments is a bad sign since fighting and flash have nothing to do with each other. Flash wins tournaments not fights. Wu shu is also NOT traditional martial arts. It is a sport. I would approach this school with doubt first and believe only after seeing a few classes and I would even try a few out. It may be a decent school for you but I lean towards finding somewhere else. You have to decide. Just my two cents.
BTW it is getting to be impossible to find a kung-fu school that doesn't use rankings of some kind. There are no ranks in traditional or feudal kung-fu.|||in china there is no belt system -- belts? you do you do you do and you continue doing. there is no reward system you just do and do and do. of course in the US belts are very important, why? that is the real question. why do we need someone to tell us that we are good at something --
